SHUFLLE DANCE: A Stylist Health Sport Dance



Nowadays, Indonesian teenager look at sport as their hobby means that it is not only seen as tool to keep their health but also as their life style. One sport which is mushrooming among teenagers is shuffle dance.  Shuffle dance is a kind of sport dance which is originally performed in clubs which means in the past only the one who frequently went to club knew this dance. Then,  this dance is performed in public and becomes an interesting show and attraction for its audiences.  
Shuffle dance was coming from Melbourne Australia in around 1980s under the Rave scene music genre. In English, the literal translation of the word shuffle means disordered, random, and stabbing. So, this such name is because the movements of the foot which is crossed each others or randomly moved with stabbing movement based on the beat of the music.
The main shuffle in Australia is called "The Melbourne Shuffle". The basis of the Melbourne Shuffle has traditionally been footwork performed or the movement emphasize on the move of heels and feet palms by combining three basic steps. First, sliding to the left or right and then back and forth. When performed well, shufflers can seem to be gliding across the floor seemingly defying friction. Second, shuffling on Spot is used for different reasons. A Shuffler using this step can conserve energy for a few moments prior to a change in beat and pattern of music. A Shuffler may step back and allow another dancer to take centre stage meanwhile Shuffling on Spot. Arm movements come into play more often while in this step as it allows the dancer to express a connection with the music as to the beat with the feet. Third, shuffle in a triangular pattern is a very energetic step which can be performed with great flair. Since the shuffle era is develop there are five different moves while shuffling in modern shuffle dance, they are:
1.      The running man is the most popular move where the shuffler "runs" on the spot. One foot is lifted from standing position and placed in front while the other slides back, then the foot at the back is lifted up into the standing position while the forward foot slides into the standing position and the process is repeated to the beat. This is also known as the two-step technique.
2.      The shuffle is a t-shaped movement, where the shuffler moves to the right with their left foot, shifting left and right as the right foot rises up and down, creating a T-shaped like shape. It is a common move amongst shufflers.
3.      Slides, where the shuffler normally slides left and right occasionally, the slide is usually and long "glide" along the dance floor and is mostly followed by a spin.
4.      Spins can be "normal" or "inverted". A normal spin meaning you lift one foot from standing position and use it to propel your body in a clockwise direction. An inverted spin is the opposite, where you lift one foot from standing position and use it to propel yourself in an anticlockwise direction. Both spins are common and are incorporated into the shuffle.
Kicks are done with one foot while the other is used to "shuffle" along to one side. Kicks can be low (some shufflers prefer to kick at the ground while shuffling to one side) and high (some shufflers kicking up to their waists). The point of kicking is to look balanced and controlled, so when kicking multiple times shufflers prefer not to bend their knees while their leg is in the air.
Jumps are used in the sequence of shuffling jumps are usually used in accordance with spins. Spin jumps are quite popular amongst shufflers.
5.      Dance moves from other styles such as miming, popping, locking, liquiding, running man and breaking can also be incorporated into shuffling.
Another thing which is important for shuffle dancer is clothing for their stage performance. Their costumes are usually casual T-shirt with or without jacket, jeans, and shoes. Since this dance use feet as the basis body part in movement, shoes becomes the most important costumes for the dancer. They usually do not use shoes with grip under the shoes sole. It is important to ease the sliding movement for the dancers on the floor.
Shuffle dance is basically performed in group that  is why some shuffle dance groups have appeared in Indonesia such as Indo Rockers (National shuffle dance group) and Malang Shuffle Dance Community (Regional shuffle dance group). The teenagers who are joining the group are mostly students. But, it does not impossible for adult to join the joy of shuffle dance. a fact which may make all people want to do shuffle dance is by doing the dance for five minutes, the dancer can reduce their calories as much as they do thirty minutes treadmill. Finally, shuffle dance can be a good choice for everyone who wants double results: being healthy and stylist. (Afif Ikhwanul M)
